Note: Be aware that names are written in Japanese order, the surname followed by the given name.

This thread explains the series created by Sorachi Hideaki, connected by its characters and story.
Sorachi Hideaki (born on May 25th 1979 in Hokkaidō Prefecture) started to create Gintama ("Silver Soul") in 2003, which later began its serialization in the second issue (of 2004) of the Japanese manga magazine "Weekly Shōnen Jump". The series is still ongoing, with its latest volume (#63) published on March 4th 2016.
Since 2006, an anime series is produced based on the story of the manga, even though with small liberties in the order of arcs.

The story plays in Edo (former name of Tokyo), a town affected by the influence of the so-called <Amanto> (aliens) and the prohibition of swordbearing for the majority of its inhabitants. As a consequence, samurais had no other chance but to retreat. Sakata Gintoki, being his very own samurai, is running a small business called <Yorozuya Gin-chan> (Odd Jobs Gin-chan) to earn money for paying his rent and making through the day. He then later runs into Shimura Shinpachi, an ambitious teenager with the goal to become a fine samurai, and Kagura, a Yato (a tribe from outer space) who decided to live peacefully on earth. With the addition of Sadaharu, an oversized dog-like Amanto, they form the current group known as Yorozuya.
As the story goes on, Gintoki meets with numerous other characters, among others acquaintances from the past, but also new people and enemies.

In the following section, I'd like to present the most important factions.

    (1) Yorozuya
Yorozuya Gin-chan is a business run by Sakata Gintoki (also called Shiroyasha), the main character of the series. Yorozuya literally means "odd-job man", and is what it seems: you request, they accomplish it.

    (2) Family & Friends
Tae is Shinpachi's older sister and works as a cabaret girl to earn her own money. She is a kind person, but can also be rough as she likes to scold the person causing her displeasure.
Gintoki's working place is living place at the same time. The owner of the bar and his home is Otose, an older woman collecting the rent in her way(s) since Gintoki is always late with the payment.

    (3) Edo's security - Shinsengumi
The Shinsengumi is Edo's police and usually seen when they help the citizens or happen to cross Gintoki and the others' path, mostly with chaotic consequences. Their trademark is the black uniform. Also, the characters for Shinsengumi mean "group of true choice". Apart from Matsudaira Katakuriko, director of the police department, the Shinsengumi is represented by Kondou Isao (Commander), Hijikata Toushirou (Vice-Commander) and Okita Sougo (1st division Captain). They also associate with Tokugawa Shigeshige.

    (4) Edo's security - Mimawarigumi
The Mimawarigumi is another institution to bring about peace. However, the ideals of its members differ from those of the Shinsengumi, as they are elitist and have a sense of more absolute justice. Both parties are seen to be rivals, their trademark is the white uniform. Also, the characters for Mimawarigumi mean "group that patrols", basically the original idea of police. This institution is represented by Sasaki Isaburou (head), and Imai Nobume (right hand).

    (5) Opposing factions - Joui
Joui is a group that fights for their home country and possesses a strong sense of patriotism. 10 years before the current storyline, a big war was fought to repress the Amanto that were about to conquer the country. The loss was enormous, but there are still groups that try to maintain these ideals for freedom, even though with radical methods such as terrorism towards the government.
On one side, there are the Joui-shishi (literally "patriots that fight for the expulsion of aliens"), led by Katsura Kotarou. He and Gintoki are friends since their childhood, and together with Takasugi Shinsuke, they were teached bushidou (warrior code) by Yoshida Shouyou.
Elizabeth is an Amanto from the Renhou tribe, who was brought to earth and given to Katsura by Sakamoto Tatsuma. A quirk of hers is to only communicate by signboards.

    (6) Opposing factions - Kiheitai
The Kiheitai (literally "army of demon soldiers") is a part of the Joui faction, but by far not as decent as Katsura's group. Even though their goal is to expel the Amanto, they go so far as to even work together with them, if there's use. This group of extremists is led by Takasugi Shinsuke, who started his way of samurai together with Gintoki and Katsura, and also fought together with them and Sakamoto in the Joui War as patriots. After the war ended, their paths divided due to the loss of their beloved teacher. Takasugi is surrounded by commanders, Kawakami Bansai, Kijima Matako and Takechi Henpeita.

    (7) Danger from outer space - Yato
Yato (literally "night rabbits") are a tribe that, in contrast to the cute meaning of their name, is marked by an overwhelming physical strength, which is said to be without equal. One of the most known Yato is Umibouzu, father of Kagura and Kamui. However, Kamui is, compared to his younger sister, a ruthless and bloodthirsty fighter. He is accompied by Abuto, who possesses an admirable strength as well and kind of looks out for Kamui.

    (8) Head of the country and his friends
The country is ruled by the Shogun, Tokugawa Shigeshige. His position is targeted by many factions, i.e. Joui, so the Shinsengumi are entrusted with the task to protect his life. Apart from them, there's a faction called O-niwaban, a group made up of ninjas who spent many years together with Shigeshige and have taken the responsibility to protect his life as well. They are represented by Hattori Zenzou and Sarutobi Ayame. Shigeshige, Hattori and Sarutobi are considered close friends.

    (9) Allies and support
As the story unfolds, Gintoki and his friends meet new people continuously, some are enemies, but others become good friends and allies, too. One of them is Yagyuu Kyuubei, a girl who was raised as a boy and promised to marry Tae. However, after some incidents, she becomes very close to Tae as a friend. Another is Tsukuyo, an assassin living in the shadows of Edo. She creates a special bond with Gintoki when the latter rescues her.
Sakamoto Tatsuma is leader of the Kaientai (literally "delightful soldiers"), a group of merchants, and a friend of Gintoki, Katsura and Takasugi from the Joui War times. They fought together as a team known as Joui4 by the fandom.
Yoshida Shouyou found a young Gintoki when the latter was fighting to survive on a battlefield. Shouyou opened a school called "Shouka Sonjuku" to teach bushidou to little samurai who hadn't rssources to pay for a proper education. Three of his disciples were Gintoki, Katsura and Takasugi who are very talented. Later, he fell victim to the Joui War.

    --Trivia--
-> Gintama features elements of samurai, sci-fi, historic drama, and 100% comedy
-> comedy is in many cases delivered by parodies, of most different series and cultures
-> it's a shōnen manga, but most characters already passed their teenage
-> Sorachi is also called Gorilla-sensei by his readers; his trademark is the gorilla icon
