It appears there are many people mad in Japan over an author comment that Oda made in his latest volume. The comment makes a joke about Sergeant Shoichi Yokoi, a WW2 soldier who was hiding for 29 years in the island of Guam after the US took control of it in a battle in 1944, fearing he would be captured alive. Though he knew WW2 ended in 1952, he still feared coming out due to soldiers in Japan being told to prefer death over being captured alive.

    The following comment reads:
When you eat from a plate and something remains uneaten, I came up with a name for this: Sergeant Yokoi. For example: "Sergeant Yokoi is left on a plate! Someone end the war!" Kids who don't understand, look it up.

If you look up the critics on Japanese amazon, by searching ONE PIECE 89 (ジャンプコミックス), many of them seem to complain mainly about the joke. It has received a 42% 1 star rating, so far.
If I copy and paste the links here, they come out huge, which is weird.

    Update:
So, for some reason the reviews were deleted. I guess it's just that they didn't have much to do with the volume itself.

    Update 2:
It seems Shueisha has apologized for Oda's author comment, and that they will take things more seriously when it comes to checking them.

This is just m but I also think the Joke is in bad taste. Maybe it's a difference in cultural backgrounds.

This just show that people are being way more sensitive to things than they should.

How is it sentive when Oda is basically saying kill this coward in a jokeing manner?

The soilder was afraid which is understandable, he didnt want to die or risk being captured.
Do you want somebody to laught at you like calling you a coward even though you serve the country you love?

    Back to the thread
Gotta agree.. This is in bad taste and good that Oda is getting backlash for his tasteless joke.

I am not saying joke is good. All I meant was it could be taken in out of context or we really don't know in what context that joke was made.

Jumping on to the conclusion without having understanding proper context is over senstivity. Its possible that Oda meant something else or he and that soldier might know each other well...

Well just from the rating and it coming from the Japanese critics. It more than likely they do know the context as by Oda was making fun of the guy.

The only ones who are getting twisted over the joke are the far right wing Japanese nationalists.

Not only that Amazon Japan reviews are utter jokes so this will have no impact.

    Its such a non story.

Lol, this is the first time I have ever cared about what Oda wrote on the cover:catblush:. That said, well, very poor choice of words here. I know that it comes from different opinions about a history figure and noone can force someone to follow their idea. Still, Oda should think more before he writes that joke. Maybe since he spends too much time on his work, he doesn't know about what most Japanese think about that soldier.

Somehow, I rather doubt this Yokoi guy would care much about it.

    It's not "somebody finish him".

It's "Sergeant Yokoi remains on the plate! Someone end the war!"
